A Proud History

The University of Michigan and the United States Navy and Marine Corps share a long and distinguished history that dates back to the the Act of 1817, which established a professorship of military science at the University of Michigan. In the summer of 1940, Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal established the Navy ROTC unit at, the University of Michigan. The NROTC unit has rich tradition of excellence and leadership and the midshipmen of Michigan continue to embrace the rich traditions established by the previous generations. Over the decades, our program has commissioned countless officers who have gone on to serve their country with distinction in various capacities within the Navy and Marine Corps. We take pride in our long-standing commitment to preparing midshipmen for the challenges and responsibilities of military service through rigorous academic, physical, and leadership training.

The University of Michigan NROTC unit is more than a training program; it is a close-knit community of aspiring leaders. Our midshipmen are involved in various campus activities, community service projects, and leadership roles that enrich their college experience and prepare them for future careers.
