Gunnery Sergeant Derek Moore was born on 11 April, 1979. Gunnery Sergeant Moore enlisted in the Marine Corps delayed entry program in October 2001 and reported to recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. Following completion of Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, North Carolina he attended his Military Occupational Specialty School at Fort Lee, Virginia for Food Service Specialist and graduated as a Private First Class in April 2002.

 

Private First Class Moore reported to III Marine Headquarter Group, 7th Communications Battalions, Okinawa Japan on April 2002. While stationed in Okinawa, Private First Class Moore’s duties included Chief Cook and Subsistence Clerk. During his time in Okinawa, Private First Class Moore deployed to Thailand, Korea, and the Philippines.

 

In July 2003 Lance Corporal Moore reported to Food Service Company, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In March of 2003, Lance Corporal Moore was promoted to the rank of Corporal where here held the billet of Warehouse Chief and Subsistence Chief. In February of 2005 Corporal Moore was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was deployed to Korean Village, Iraq where he served as the Subsistence Chief during the time he was deployed. After his tour in Iraq, Gunnery Sergeant Moore reported back to Food Service Company, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he had orders to report to Drill Instructor School at Parris Island, South Carolina.

 

In January 2006, Sergeant Moore reported to Drill Instructor school where here spent the next three years training Recruits into basically trained Marines. Sergeant Moore held the billets of Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor. In May of 2007 Sergeant Moore reported to work with the Medical Rehabilitation Platoon as a Drill Instructor to mentor and train recruits who were held back from training due to medical reasons. In April 2009 Staff Sergeant Moore reported to 8th Marine Regiment, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he held the billets of Chief Cook and Mess Chief.  Sergeant Moore was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in April of 2009 and served as Subsistence Chief. In October 2009 Sergeant Moore was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.

In August of 2012 Staff Sergeant Moore reported to the Marine Corps Detachment, Alpha Company, Fort Lee, Virginia, Basic Food Service Specialist Course where he served as an Instructor and Academics Chief

 

In May 2015 Staff Sergeant Moore was then transferred to the University of Michigan NROTC program where he now serves as the Assistant Marine Officer Instructor and promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

 

Gunnery Sergeant Moore’s personal decorations include; Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal 3rd award, and Good Conduct Medal 3rd Award.
